Pythagoras believed that all things were made of numbers. He treated numbers as religion and associated every number with divine meanings. For example, number 1 (the monad represented the origin of all things and the number 2 (the dyad) represented matter.  

Unfortunately, the deep belief in numbers also leads him believe in rational numbers, not irrational numbers which he considered ungodly. When Hippasus, one of his philosophers, found out about √2 — it was such a shock and of course it was a blasphemy! Little was documented about Hippasus, though it is said he was drowned at the sea, apparently as a punishment from the Gods for divulging this… …

It seems that most time, there was a bloody story behind the great discovery in the history.
